Gammellung og Tuerne

Kreaturerne kommer

In April 2022, Gammellung Mose got new 'half-yearly' residents. Faxe Municipality has purchased Galloway cattle, which will take care of nature in the bog over the summer. They are generally released in April and spend in the bog until there is no longer enough food for them - typically around November. Our animal keeper looks after the cows and keeps a close eye on whether they are well and, especially in the autumn period, when it is time to come to the barn.

In general, cattle are good for nature care because they eat a wide range of the plants that grow on the land. As ruminants, they need to eat coarse material and like to eat fresh, green shoots. This provides a grazing where something is taken over the entire area.

Cattle like to graze both wet and dry areas. As they graze, they trample down withered plant growth, and
it provides space and light for new growth. Cattle are so heavy that they trample through the plant cover in the wetter areas. In this way, a good mosaic of tubers and holes with water is formed. It creates a wide range of microhabitats that can accommodate a rich insect and plant life. In addition, special microhabitats occur at coke boxes, which also provide habitat for a number of insects.
