Great natural prize for Hellerød Kær Nature conservation association
The Foundation June 15 NATURAL PRIZE 2016 was awarded for the first time and went to the Hellerød Kær Nature conservation association, which has worked for restoration and nature care in the fens at Thyholm. The prize is DKK 150,000 and was presented on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at the Plant Congress in Herning.
"The Nature Prize goes to a project with a remarkably high natural value. Today, up to 40 hectares of extreme fens on Thyholm in the Limfjord, there are more than 150 different species of wet plants in a mosaic of different types," says the proposal for the prize, which continues:
"Without the efforts of the Nature Conservation Association, the rich nature content would have disappeared. Almost in the" last minute ", in 2005, the landowners initiated a comprehensive effort that has since led to the recovery and nature care of the fens. If there were more like the landowners in Hellerød Kær Nature conservation association, then Danish nature would not be so cramped. "
Today, about 25 landowners are organized in the Nature conservation association, which has manually cleared willow scrub and roofing and started grazing the fens. Today there are be approx. 30 Galloway animals grazing the fens. The nature quality of the area is high and continues to increase, as is the ongoing work for smaller extensions of the nature area.
Work on nature conservation is also supported today by the association "Friends of the Kæret", which in order to participate in the supervision of the animals is given the right to purchase meat from the cattle in addition to the accompanying exercise and nature experiences.
The project is thus well rooted in the local area, and among other things, meat from the animals can be enjoyed at Tambohus Kro, which is next door to the valuable nature area.
Precisely the anchorage was a crucial factor in awarding the award. The Foundation emphasized the exemplary cooperation between Hellerød Kær Nature conservation association, the Danish Society for Nature Conservation and Struer Municipality. A collaboration that runs under the motto "Good nature we create together".
