Svenstrup Kaer

Nature restoration of Svenstrup Kaer

In Sventrup Kaer, between Lienskrænten and the great decalcified dunes, one of the most important and valuable reserves in Jammerbugt municipality is found. The fen includes several alkaline fens rich in species and petrifying springs creating a mosaic with species-rich Nardus and semi natural dry grasslands including an array of wet and dry dune habitats.

Svenstrup Aa takes its rise in Sventrup Kaer, and combined with several petrifying spring tributaries rising in Lienskrænten or the numerous erosion valleys in the cliff, it takes part in defining Svenstrup Kaer as a unique and beautiful nature reserve.

The state of nature today

The alkaline fens are spread out in the fen and along Svenstrup Aa, and a number of alkaline fens are in a good natural state with numerous plant species such as the rare northern marsh orchid characteristic for this part of the country. However most of the alkaline fens are in a bad state because they are over growing with especially common reed and willow. Furthermore several alkaline fens are affected by drainage or high water levels. Previously the alkaline fens were wide spread, but as management like hay harvest and grazing in the fen became less, the wide light-open fen with grasses and herbs grew over with rush, reed and other tall herbaceous perennials and the willow scrub has spread.

Action must be taken if we want things to turn around and restore the former richness of the nature with widespread alkaline fens and a stream of good quality.
