Calcareous fens
- Calcareous fens occur on moist or wet areas.
- Calcareous fens are often sited at the bank of smaller lakes, in marshes/swamps or as a stage of overgrowing (succession) in extensively exploited meadows/marshes and fens/ponds.
- Calcareous fens are mainly found in areas with a calcareous ground.
- Calcareous fens are not present in the western Jutland, but appear in the rest of Denmark where 86 ha have been mapped. In this project the goal is to secure preservation of 16% of the habitat area in Denmark and increase the area of calcareous fens with 4,5 ha.
Calcareous fens are a “prioritized type of nature” in this project.
