Petrifying springs

A petrifying spring is a spring where groundwater pours up on the surface of the ground.

  • Petrifying springs are the small areas where groundwater pours out. The calcareous groundwater usually leaves lime (tufa) around the spring.
  • Petrifying springs are usually dominated by mosses.
  • Petrifying springs only appear in a few places. 23 ha of petrifying springs have been mapped in the western Jutland and 336 ha in the rest of Denmark. The goal of the project is to secure preservation of 15 % of the habitat area in the western Jutland and increase the area of petrifying spring with a total of 7,0 ha.
  • Petrifying springs are preserved by preserving its surroundings and the entire water system that the spring or the springs are part of.

Petrifying springs are a “prioritized type of nature” in this project.
